Client
Carmen Bik-Delgado is a Spanish writer born in Logroño and based in Antwerp, where she has spent half of her life.
She has a Diploma in Psychology from the Autonomous University of Madrid and currently her occupation is writing historical novels and psychological thrillers.
Design of the book
The novel takes place between XVI century Logroño and Antwerp and intertwines historical events with the characters’ life.
The visual style of the book was defined by a mix of influences from the XVI century and specific descriptions that appear in the novel. These influences inspired the design and use of certain graphic elements that were used to build the book, portraying aspects from the time period in which the book takes place without jeopardizing a comfortable reading experience and appropriate design.
The layout of the book is systematized in a way that can be used for the second part of the duology.

The book cover showcases a gimmel ring that appears in the book. It was 3D modelled in collaboration with the author, who offered feedback. The title lettering is inspired by the bastarda blackletter script used back then.

The back cover includes the plot of the book, the author’s profile and other informative and legal elements.

The design of the book’s interior prioritizes legibility and cleanliness. It uses the Adobe Caslon typeface, a digitalization of the original Caslon, recipient of the Dutch typographic tradition that developed form the XVI century.
