Leka Nosht

An unsettling yet comforting peek into the night urban landscape.

Leka Nosht (“Good night” in Bulgarian) is a photo zine by Quique Ojeda that compiles a nocturnal photography series taken primarily in Bulgaria. The pictures for this project were taken during several trips to the country in 2024.

Concept

Inspired by emptied spaces in the night, Quique Ojeda explores the beauty and calmness of all that is silent, even when you find yourself in completely unknown places.

This idea is related to the concept of “liminality”. Liminality is the unsettling yet calm sensation that certain transitional spaces make us feel. For the author, this is brought out by decontextualization that occurs when glancing upon social and functional spaces stripped of their intrinsic qualities: Abandoned commercial underpasses, out of service bus stations, empty roads, out of business shop’s windows, and even places that although during the day are littered with people, at night they turn silent, and only a few sings telling people were there remain.

Design of the publication

The zine consists of 36 full-color pages, printed on shiny coated paper and saddle-bound, presented inside a hand-stamped glassine envelope.

The front cover includes an image that opens the visual narrative without any other informative element that interferes in its viewing. The back cover has a custom lettering with the title in Bulgarian and other informative elements.

The layout is constructed by full bleed pictures with black pages put in between at some points to establish a pause in the visual narrative.

I despise the blue of the sky while I await the red sunset.
When the night is darkest, I hope for the dawn to last forever.
